Sump pump
A pump in a pit below the basement floor that removes groundwater collecting around the foundation and discharges it away from the building.
Failure modes on a vacant property: power loss, mechanical failure, a stuck float switch, or a frozen or blocked discharge line. A frozen discharge is a common Alberta failure — the pump runs, the water cannot leave, and it returns.
Worth testing before an extended absence and confirming the discharge line is clear and directed well away from the foundation.
