P-trap
The curved section of drain pipe beneath a fixture that holds water, sealing the drain against sewer gas entering the building.
trapdrain trap
The water evaporates when a fixture is unused. In a vacant property a trap can dry within weeks, faster in dry winter air with heating running.
A dried trap is the most common reason a long-empty house smells wrong. Running each fixture briefly at every visit prevents it entirely.
