Radon
A naturally occurring radioactive gas from uranium decay in soil and rock that accumulates in enclosed indoor spaces, particularly lower levels.
Health Canada identifies radon as the leading cause of lung cancer among people who have never smoked, and sets a guideline of 200 becquerels per cubic metre.
Alberta records higher residential concentrations than the national average. Levels vary house by house, so only a measurement in the specific building means anything.
Health Canada recommends a long-term test of at least three months during the heating season.
