Chinook
A warm, dry downslope wind off the Rocky Mountains that can raise Calgary temperatures 20 to 30 °C within hours.
Chinooks bring relief from cold and a set of property problems with it: rapid melt and refreeze, ice damming, meltwater at foundations, and sustained winds frequently exceeding 100 km/h.
The repeated freeze-thaw cycling a chinook winter produces is harder on a building than steady cold would be.
