Work

Fourteen days out, fourteen days home, all year.

The most Calgary reason on this list. Camp rotations, site work and fly-in schedules produce a house that is empty half of every month, permanently.

Typical duration

Two to three weeks, repeating indefinitely

Notice you get

Known well ahead, on a fixed roster

Contactable?

Poorly, during shifts

Dominant risk

Freeze in winter rotations; cumulative neglect year-round

Rotational work is enormously common in and around Calgary — oil and gas, mining, pipeline, camp-based construction, utilities. A 14/14 or 21/21 rotation means the property is unoccupied for half the year, in fortnight-long blocks, indefinitely.

That pattern is genuinely different from a single long absence. Nothing accumulates for six months, but nothing gets a proper look either, and the fortnight is exactly long enough for a slow leak or a heating failure to do real damage before the owner walks back in.

Camp connectivity is the other complication. Signal at site is frequently poor, shifts are long, and a worker on nights is not going to be answering questions about a plumber at 2 PM.

For single workers, or where the whole household travels, the house is genuinely empty. Where a partner stays, it is not — which changes the arrangement entirely and is worth being clear about up front.

What makes this different

Every situation on this site is empty for a reason. These are the things specific to this one.

Recurring rather than one-off

A permanent pattern, not an event. It suits a standing arrangement that runs on the rotation calendar rather than a booking made each time.

Fortnight-long gaps, forever

Short enough that people dismiss them, frequent enough that over a year the property spends six months unoccupied.

Poor contactability at site

Long shifts, patchy signal, and rotating day-night schedules make the owner hard to reach during exactly the windows the house is empty.

Winter rotations carry the full freeze risk

A fortnight in January with no heat is not a smaller version of a season away. It is enough.

What typically goes wrong

  • A heating failure early in a rotation running the full fortnight
  • The pattern being visible from the street — a car gone for exactly two weeks, repeatedly
  • Being unreachable at site when something needs a decision
  • Mail and parcels accumulating on a predictable fortnightly cycle
  • Preparation fatigue — nobody shuts the water off forty times a year
